The first Christmas we had was here at the house with Darleen, Pat and Grandma. We decided to do it a day early because of all the bad weather that was going to be coming on Christmas Eve (And Nana could not wait to see the babies). At the last minute I called Darleen and said, "Do you think you can come over today?" She was all for it. In fact I had to work that day so she brought most of the dinner. It was goulash, homemade bread, salad and ice cream sundaes for dessert.

We exchanged gifts and played some cards while Grandma partook of some holiday spirits.

Even though the five of us had a great time and enjoyed the time together it felt a bit different from the days when we had a house full a people and the place was trashed with wrapping paper all over the place. I guess it is time for new traditions.

Darleen and her non-dainty jewelry.

Pat opening his present.

Grandma with her present.

Part 2 Christmas at Logan and Mindy's

We (Dan, Denise, and Grandma) got up and headed down to Lansing to have Christmas Eve and Christmas with Logan, Mindy, and Harper. After Mindy got home from work, we all packed up to go to Christmas Eve service. We met up with Mindy's mom and step dad, sister, and brother-in-law. It was a nice evening of song and worship. We topped that off with some venison and pancakes.

On Christmas morning we got up and enjoyed watching Harper opening her presents. She had to have help this year but wait until next year. I think she will be right in there ripping the wrapping paper off the presents. Logan, Mindy, and Harper left just before noon to have a party with Mindy's family. When they returned we started getting our Christmas dinner started. We enjoyed some Prime Rib, baked potatoes, and Darleen's corn.

Logan, Mindy, Harper, and Jack

Part 3 Dunsmore Annual Christmas Party
On to the Dunsmore's Annual Christmas Party!! There again many people were missing. Lucas, Kim, Allie and Ryan....Jesse and Rachel.....Lauren, Jeff and Morgan. A few showed up that don't usually come though and that was a great surprise. Randy, Nikki and Jake drove all the way to Flint for the party and went home that evening. We had a nice spread of food as usual. We started off with a small gift exchange game where you could steal from each other. It was fun and a few gifts were always being sought after. It was time once again to see who had who's name. I (Denise) was a little worried someone would be without a gift. We had a lot of gifts being sent by the mail, or other people brought gifts for people who wasn't going to be there. We, alone had a truck full of presents going in so many different directions it wasn't funny. It all went off great except for the fact that Dale and I both got a gift from Lucas which puzzled a few people. I announced to everyone that I was sure Kim had my name because I knew Lucas had Uncle Dale's. WRONG... it was just the opposite. All in all it was a great surprise that no one's gifts were missing or forgotten. This year I made the name tags in green so no one could say that they weren't sure if there name was this years or last years. So we drew names for 2010 party which is at the Miller's. Maybe not the weekend of Christmas, we'll have to see. It would fall on a Sunday and that don't seem to be a good time for everyone who has to work. Time will tell.

Denise waiting for her gift! Dan getting his cooler on wheels from Shanny

Christmas Part 4 Traveling to Boston
I don't know about Poppy but Nana didn't sleep too good knowing she was heading out to see the babies, and Kim and Lucas of course. We stayed up way too late, laughed so much and the excitement was too much. Got up in the dark and out the door we went. I didn't even take my makeup off from the day before so I could leave fast. The roads were a little slippery from Burton to Port Huron but after that they were good. Now getting back into the good ole US of A was another story. We waited and waited and waited...finally after 1 hr. and 25 min. it was our turn to show passports. Dan here: I have to jump in and tell a little story about our passports....Denise did not set out my passport the night before we left home. So we are driving downstate between Gaylord and Grayling when Denise pulls out her enhanced driver's license (which acts as a passport for traveling thru Canada) and tells us about her awful photo on it. Then....she sees the "deer in the headlight" look from me. So now what...Do we turn around and go back and get it? Do we travel an extra 2-3 hours by going around Canada? Denise comes up with an idea...She calls my cousin's husband, Tom. She asks him to go into our house get the passport, get it over to Darleen to bring it down to the party at Dale's. (I probably should not have brought it up because Denise was finally forgetting about my forgetfulness).I kinda figured because of that the twins were going to be sleeping when we got there, and they were. It turned out ok though because I know I was too tired to hold Ry guy while he jumped and jumped ...or read book after book to Allie. It was nice just to visit with Kim and Lucas for awhile in the quiet. BUT...morning could not get there fast enough.

Part 5 Christmas at Lucas and Kim's
That morning was pretty exciting. With the twins being four months older than Harper they were a little more into it than their cousin, but still needed a little help. Poor Luke and Kim...their house looked a little like Toys R Us before we left. Nana promised that next year she won't go so crazy shopping for the grand babies. But you have to understand that she has been waiting for this opportunity for a long time. Well, the twins got a little tired before they could open all of their presents so it took a couple of times before it was finally finished.
We were finally excited to see Luke, Kim, and the twins without anyone getting married. We had the twins all to ourselves without any other distractions. I think that Allie and Ryan were a little confused to see us out of that box (meaning the computer... as we Skype quite a bit). It was very exciting to hold them and feed them their bottles. We, also, had a great time with Lucas and Kim after the babies went to bed. We played euchre and the guys won despite being beat in a game where Luke got to do his famous loner dance (the only loner dance of the evening). We got so excited one game that we had a wrong score 8 instead on 9. After we went in the barn (score of 9) Kim said, "Close that barn door and get those cows back out into the pasture." We played another new game where three people tells the fourth, "What theirs is like" example: on card was mother-in-law. Denise had to guess. Luke's clue...mine's far away, I said mine was old. Kim said mine is in this room. Now Denise was not getting it and became frustrated. Second round Luke said mine is chatty. I said mine was short. Denise was still frustrated and not getting it so Kim's clue was mine is very confused. After a lot of laughing by three people Denise gave the correct answer.
It was great watching Kim feed the twins and the interesting concoctions she used to get them to eat the type of food they may not like to eat. Like finding out they may not like a certain food but put on toast they love it.
Ryan had a milestone while we were there....he started crawling more than one step at a time.
Now Kim has to come up with new ways to stop one from crawling away while she is tending to the other.
Kim is Nana and Poppy's hero. I don't know how she does it. Alone all day lifting, feeding, changing, reading to, and playing with two babies. That is close to 40 pounds of babies. I know Luke, you are there, too.
One day Luke had to go into work the three of us and babies ventured out to the park with the swings (on Kim and Luke's blog site). Allie loved it but Ryan looked a little tentative. We didn't quite get back to the house before it rained but Nana gave up her jacket to keep the twins dry.
Denise was asked to make gleasons. Seems like Luke sorta likes that meal. I'm not sure if the twins will take after their father as chicken is one of those foods Kim has to mix with yogurt to get them to eat it.

Allie and Ryan enjoying two gifts from Nana and Poppy.

Kim's idea of indoor sledding.

Part 6 Traveling to Columbus
While it was great being at Luke and Kim's, we still had one more stop before Denise had to go back to work. So we got up early (thanks to Allie jibber jabbering in her crib. It's better than an alarm clock) helped feed the twins their bottle, kissed everyone goodbye and headed for Columbus 754 miles away.
So far we had excellent roads for our travels...until Connecticut. Neither Denise or I had been in that state before this trip. Not sure we will go back there during the winter months. Seems they had a little freezing rain then a little snowfall before we got to that state. We lost one hour sitting on the freeway stopped several times for cars in fender benders where the car behind could not stop in time before they plowed into the car in front of them.
Now we were getting low on fuel and I am concerned we will be stopped long enough that we could run out of gas. So finally we get going and found an exit that said easy off/easy on. I thought great that is what I want. I, also, thought that would be a great time to use the restroom. Wrong. It seems that state has problems with working restrooms. The gas station sign read out of order. We tried a Dunkin Donut, sign read do not use. So I got back in the truck and stopped 4 hours later. It was good the roads got better in New York and Pennsylvania as there are some pretty good mountains there. We were mesmerized by the beauty of the mountains at first. And then after about an hour of up and down our ears started plugging. I have never driven from one end of Pennsylvania before so I could not believe how far it was. I didn't think I would ever be so happy to see flat land.

Part 7 New Years at Loralee and Grant's
So we pulled into Loralee and Grant's New Year's Eve. Loralee & Grant had an assortment of snacks for us and a fire in the fireplace. So after filling our faces and getting cozy in front of the fireplace and after driving over 12 hours we were beat. Denise and Loralee headed for bed probably because Denise had to drive the last 3 hours exhausted.(Loralee had a cold so she didn't feel very well anyway) so just Grant and I made it to midnight to watch the flying car. Actually I nodded off just before midnight and had to watch the rerun. But they didn't miss JayLo in her nude outfit :)
New Year's Day there might have been a football game on.... I can't remember. The girls decided to do a little shopping while I got my tires rotated and had the oil changed after the long trip. As what usually happens when you take a vehicle in they found that I needed new rotors and brake pads. Grant did not like the price they were quoting so he said lets do it ourselves we have until 4 p.m. when the Rose Bowl starts. Ohio State vs. Oregon. Grant's Buckeyes were victorious. But we were not finished so we missed the first half but got updates on the truck radio, Grant's cell phone, and the TV. Grant did not like the looks of the brake lines and he said if the front brakes were that bad we should replace the rear brakes, also. While we had the truck up on jacks the shocks were found to be near the end of their life so we got those replaced. we decided to have the rear brakes and shocks done professionally which added an extra day in Westerville, OH. That's what happens when you put 100,000 miles on a vehicle. But it has been a pretty good vehicle so far.
So while we were getting that done Denise and Loralee went to the jewelers....... that is another story. Let's just say Denise spent her Christmas bonus with a little added help. Her diamond was always coming loose and it was in a thin thin band so she replaced it with a thicker one. This is her last big jewelry to do for a long long time. Now it was time to say good bye to Loralee & Grant, Loralee got up and saw us off at 7:00 am . We didn't see Grant. It had snowed the night before, Loralee says it only snows when we come down there.

Part 8 Trip Home

Driving back to Michigan we were going to go right home but then we started thinking of our little baby Harper who is only 1/2 hour out of our way. Should we or shouldn't we??? Well if you guesses we should you are right. We met Logan and Harper at Flap Jack for brunch. She just sat in her car seat and rubbed her cheeks until she fell asleep. What an angel baby. We took off and drove up to Tower and slipped into Grandma's for a quick hello and to show her some pictures we took of the babies. We finally got home around 6:30pm, after 2400 miles behind us. It will be nice having all of our family living closer someday. That day can't come too soon. We are home long enough to clean, wash clothes, take down a few Christmas decorations and back downstate to see the twins, Harper, and our 2 sons and their wives. Oh wait maybe we will have to take a trip first to Traverse City while Grandma has her back surgery. WE can! 2009 has been a very productive year for the Millers. In case you didn't know (haha) we (Dan & Denise better known as Nana & Poppy) have three beautiful Grandkids!! :)

Lucas wrote in an e-mail to me the other day "don't you think you should change your pro-file picture, this one is really out-dated. I didn't know if it was possible but with alot of prayer and support from family and friends it got done. By the time Logan and Mindy got married I can admit I was a little drained. Well I guess I will start with Grant because he and Loralee were married first. Actually I have known Mindy longer so I will start with her. When Logan first brought Mindy home I was surprised how much she reminded me of myself at that age. The thing I love most about Mindy is she is such a free spirit. She has her own creativity all of her own. I never seen anyone who can put colors together like she can and it looks fabulous. She is willing to try hairdo's that most of would be terrified and she always looks great. (except for the time she showed up at Christmas with black hair). I kid you not I looked out the window and didn't even know who it was. I mean, come on who does that, most of us if we were even to try this would do it at a time when we wouldn't be seeing anyone or would have time to dye it back if we didn't like it. Not Mindy, she come walking in with a smile on her face. I think Logan was surprised too!! I just think Mindy is a knock-out with her blonde hair, so I can honestly say I didn't like it and I believe her mom told me the same thing. But that is our Mindy....fun, good mommy, makes the most beautiful quilts (which I hope to get one day), I have hinted a few times. She loves to shop, and I thank God I don't live close to her because I think I would become addicted. She always finds the coolest stuff and bargins. One of the things I love about Mindy also is she always makes us feel at home when we stay with them and she always says "Come anytime, you are always welcome." Not too many girls would tell a Nana that, because they would want to be there all the time to play with their granddaughter and Jack too! One more thing I have never seen any girl who can put things together and figure things out like she can! It's a good thing because I don't know if Logan likes doing that. Welcome to the family Mindy, I hope you feel loved.

Ok...now Grant. Meeting Grant for the first time was priceless. I actully told Dan when we left the Melting Pot..which by the way is a must restuarant to go to, but have lots of time and money, I said, " that's the guy Loralee is going to marry." Dan thought it too, but he doesn't voice his opinion as freely as I do. After hearing that Logan told Grant, meeting my dad will be easy it's my mom you have to worry about, I just walked up to Grant and said "hello I'm Denise the mean one". He just laughed! Now that I know Grant, he seemed not so talkative that night as the Grant we know now. I think he was just letting us go on and on with our questions. I have to say Dan and I were very happy with Grant, finally Loralee had a guy who offered to even pay the dinner bill, which Dan was getting because it was a birthday dinner for Loralee/and a get to know Grant dinner. When we were done we found out the bill had already been paid. It was very nice but very humbling because it was a very large dinner bill. Grant insisted so Dan let him get away with it. Grants brother gave a toast at the wedding and told the crowd that his brother had one of the biggest hearts of anyone he knew, I have to agree with him. The thing I love about Grant is that he has a love for the important things in life, like family and spending time together. Grant also knows how to do things, fix things, and he has a beautiful home for him and Loralee. The only thing I would change about Grant is I would love for him to have this burning desire to move to Michigan!! We need to get a boat. :) Welcome to the family Grant and I hope you feel loved also!

So after twin grandbabies, a granddaughter, 2 weddings, 4 showers we are getting ready for the Christmas Holiday! I'm really looking forward to 2010, we can start having birthday parties and all the exciting new adventures that are waiting for us. I must take time to Thank God for all these blessings we had this year. It was a year of prayer and Thanksgiving. And did i mention Dan and I had a will/trust made out, and Dan has his time in on the boats. We are definately feeling retirement coming our way. I will positively look forward to the last time I have to pick up the phone to see when that boat is due in. If it wasn't for the Grace of God I would never have been able to survive this kind of a life. I don't think we will ever forget "2009"!!

Dad and Mom Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12656655878217686609noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730212803118705887.post-26991046098795550912009-12-07T22:00:00.011-05:002009-12-09T11:58:20.820-05:00The Present and the Past!
The John G Munson (Poppy's Boat right now)

We are getting ready for a big storm coming our way. This is a picture of us with him when he turned 80 years old. He loved that party. A friend of his told me one day that he said to him after this birthday party, "I have the best kids and family in the world." I believe he really meant that. Grandpa sometime had a hard time showing feelings, emotions, but I think alot of men that grew up in that era had the same problem. One of the last things he told me before he passed away was "I had a wonderful life." He was a very content man who loved the simple things in life. A creature of habit!! I miss him everyday but am at peace that he spends his time with our Heavenly Father instead of us now. I sent my dad a card one time telling him Thank you for his time in the service when he fought for our country in World War II. I think that might have been his favorite card from me ever. Ryan you can be proud that you were named after your Great Grandpa, he would have loved you, Allie, and Harper beyond words. And you can also be proud that you were named after your mommy's whole family, they are the BEST!!

Another thing I was thinking about tonight was the fun we had one Christmas in the kitchen making Sugar Cookies. I have always had a downfall, and it is COOKIES! Hot cookies out of the oven and a cold glass of milk. Sugar Cookies are one of my favorite cookies but I hate to make them by myself. It just isn't fun making them all by yourself. You have to pick out the cut-out you want, the color of frosting, with sprinkles or not. Just too many decisions to do alone. I think someday they will be the most fun cookie to make with my grandkids, we will just make a mess and eat them all. :)

Great Grandma, Kim,(Mommy), and Aunt LaLa

Another person I was thinking about tonight was Aunt Darleen. What would we have done without her all these years. Not only has she been a great sister/friend but she has done so much for me and my kids. I think back over the years, every event we had she was a big part. She always made Halloween costumes for them, because I didn't know how to sew or wasn't really creative in that area and yes it was a big deal because my kids loved Halloween and getting dressed up. One of my kids (Lucas) always wanted to be something very creative and that is where Aunt Darleen came in. Another area she has been so helpful is our weddings. She helped everyone of her nieces with flowers or decorating. But my favorite part of her is that no matter what event, or big deal that is happening in your life, she is just as happy and excited as you are. I owe her a big Thank-you for everything over the years. And we can't forget about all the bread Great Grandma has made and gleasons. That goes without saying how much we have all appreciated that. I love her story about helping Kim learn to make bread. She always tells everyone that Kim was anxious that day to watch as Grandma started making the bread, and she said " get your hands in the dough that is the only way you can learn to make bread."
Aunt Darleen & Ryan
I think there is another blog coming soon if the big blizzard hits!! Then it started heading right towards me not offering a very good kill shot. So not wanting to wound the deer, I let it travel towards me hoping it would turn broadside. When it got about 60 yards away it finally got fairly broadside so I aimed and squeezed the trigger. What I saw next kinda sickened me....he took off like there was no tomorrow. I thought how in the world did I completely miss him. So after waiting about 10-15 minutes, I finally start looking for blood. There was no blood to be found. I tried to follow the path that I saw him high-tail it to the woods but still nothing. I decided to look into the woods and thought I saw a clump of snow. But it was 47 degrees outside. There had been no snow. Upon further investigation I realized it was that hind end of the buck. That was a huge relief.

It would only be fitting if I saved those horns to give to my first born grandson....not that they are huge or anything but to represent the great year in the Miller family.

Dad and Mom Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12656655878217686609noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730212803118705887.post-33687278769250651812009-11-04T22:16:00.017-05:002009-11-06T13:54:22.169-05:00Real proud Grandparents!!!
I can't believe it's been two years since our last post. We had a nice time and Mindy had the apartment all cute with a great Halloween sign in the front yard. I can't wait to see the place at Christmas!! When we got there Jack was outside doing his duty and running all over the place. We played all morning with him on the bed, he was ready to get rowdy and start the day off with his puppy ways. Loralee couldn't wait to get back and see him. When she got back on Sunday, Jack was home alone so she and Jake went in and played with him and took him outside for awhile. She really wants to steal him and take him home with her. I think Jack is going to be the center of attention for awhile, what do you think?

Dad and Mom Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12656655878217686609noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730212803118705887.post-22368408168290833592007-10-04T10:28:00.001-05:002007-10-04T10:28:09.162-05:00Check out my Slide Show!

Dad and Mom Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12656655878217686609noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730212803118705887.post-14064517236048578552007-09-23T09:31:00.000-05:002007-09-23T10:48:30.684-05:00D & D to BOSTON

Well it's hard to believe it happened. Darleen and I (Denise) decided to plan a trip to Boston to see Lucas & Kim. After long and hard research for the best plane ticket price ever....we were on our way!! I started looking for plane tickets in June, when my boss told me he was taking a week off in September to go on an elk hunt in Montana. One day while I was at work the tickets were $198.00 but I wasn't sure at that time if Darleen was going with me or not so I didn't book them. All of a sudden they started going up and up and up.....I was not feeling good about this. So I decided to see how the price was on Sept 11th. Well it must not be the favorite day to fly because the tickets on that day were $218.00 round trip. Still not clicking on the purchase ticket button, I decided to go to church that Sunday and if I was meant to go and at a good price the tickets would be that same price when I got home. So...after thinking about it a little longer I called Lucas and asked him if he thought we'd get a better price and he said, "Mother click the purchase ticket NOW." I knew from the tone of his voice he was tired of me and my pickyness. It's a good thing I clicked because the next day the ticket was $589.00 and then they kept going up and up. At the end the ticket was $1,285.00 for the same ticket. By the way those seats were empty still on the day of the flight. So then the planning began. Of course Darleen was packed and organized a week before our trip, with Christmas present wrapped to go, unlike her baby sister who packed the night before and morning of. Dan would tell you that is normal for me! The trip started off a little shaky at the get-go. We drove to Flint and stayed the night at Dale & Deb's house. Dale decided he wouldn't be able to take us to Loralee's so David jumped in and said he would. Well the night he was suppose to take us he was sitting in a locked garage waiting for someone to show up to unload his truck. Loralee to the rescue. She came and picked us up. We spent the night watching a marathon of the Wedding Channel which we planned Loralee's up-coming wedding. Only one thing we have to find the groom!! Anyway during the night I woke up with a horrible sore-throat, headache, chills, and sick to my stomach. I woke Darleen up at 6:00 am and told her I didn't know if I could go I was so sick. They made me a hot chocolate, and I decided to start getting ready. We were on our way. An hour late but plenty of time when we got there. We said our goodbye's to Loralee and without any problems got our e-tickets and had plenty of time to spare. The flight was good except for the girl who sat next to Darleen spilled her drink into her lap and we had to help her out. The landing was fantastic....it was raining so hard and foggy we didn't see land until the tires hit the runway. The timing was perfect because Lucas was running a little late, so after we got our luggage he was there with a few minutes to spare. Also he had a clean trunk...that is a whole other story. We decided to go to the store and buy groceries and surprise Kim with a homecooked chicken dinner when she got home from work. So out in the pouring rain we went. It was just great to see them both and spend time. The next day we went into Boston and went to a Museum. It was Darleen's first time on the subways. The next day we went into Boston and did a tour on the trolley around town. We got off and went and took a tour of the USS Constitution ship. That was fun. The day was long but Darleen saw alot. I've seen most of the sites except the USS Constitution. We also took a boat around the harbor. It was a beautiful day. We played alot of euchere in the evenings and had to put up with Lucas doing a stupid "LONER DANCE", I think Kim did a couple of those dances also. One was when she was making fun of him. Friday evening Kim, Darleen and I went to a local pub for supper and watched a little of the Red Sox game. After we drove to the church and showed Darleen around. Lucas was having a kick-off Spam Party for the youth. That was interesting and smelly. Soon it was Saturday and time for us to leave. The worst part of the trip is always having to say goodbye. We made it quick with a few tears. The flight home was so fast we couldn't believe it. We must have had a tail wind pushing us. We held hands when the plane took off, which I like to do because I don't like taking off, but Darleen went along with it. It was ok when we sat next to each other but it was kinda weird looking across the isle. People probably thought we were lezzies. haha......I'm not sure on that spelling but you know what I mean. The rest of the trip was smooth and easy. Did I mention Darleen's poor hurting feet. The day after our tour of Boston, she had swelling and pain like no other. That is going to be checked out when she goes to the doctor. So other than my sickness and her feet the trip was GREAT!! also Lucas didn't get a spanking for the first time. This only a few people will get.

Dad and Mom Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12656655878217686609noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730212803118705887.post-5206584329920860842007-09-21T12:44:00.000-05:002007-09-23T09:30:56.316-05:00Take your wife & daughter to work day(s).

I have a unique job to say the least. A lot of you, at first, did not understand how my job worked. Maybe you still don't. But it does have a few perks. Like take your wife to work day (or week). In the past 20 years I have been able to bring my wife and/or children for a trip on the boat. I have taken advantage of this in the past...Lucas went from Rogers City to Cedarville about 4 hours. Logan went from Rogers City to Duluth and back to the Soo Locks. Denise has been able to go on the boat a number of times. (Thank you P Dot for watching the kids.) My favorite was when she came on the Calcite II and it was our anniversary. The boat was going thru the Detroit River. (Remember that is where the world's only floating post office is located.) I called ahead and had the "Flower Lady" ( A woman with a flower shop who send flowers to alot of the boats on special days like Father's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving,Christmas, etc...) send a bouquet of flowers sent to the boat by way of the floating post office or AKA.. J.W. Westcott. They came while we were sleeping and put just outside our room but when I got up for work I put them in our room. When she woke up in the dark she could not figure out where that smell was coming from.
Well, Denise has not been able to come aboard for a few years due to work and other things. Plus, the last time she came on the boat was rolling quite a bit. Denise pulled a "Debbie". She did not feel very well.
Anyway, this past Labor Day weekend she was able to come aboard for 3 days as her boss was out of town giving her some time off. She came aboard at Stoneport and we went to Detroit to unload stone and then back to Stoneport. We even had a visitor at Detroit. Loralee came to see us. But to come to the boat the J.W. Wescott must bring you from under the Ambassador Bridge to our dock at Zug Island. About a 20-30 minute ride. We had high hopes that she would be able to ride with us up to Stoneport but the boat took longer to unload than usual and she needed to make sure she could get back to work on Tuesday. But she did get to spend the day with us and was treated to a nice supper of filet mignon.

As Loralee has never been on the boat while it was moving I am hoping to get her on before I retire. I have been busy hauling coal. Coal is becoming quite a cherished commodity. A lot of countries have been buying up a lot of our coal leaving less for the powerplants in our country. I am in Toledo today for the second day in a row. Taking our third coal load in a row to Detroit. I should get home Saturday morning for a few hours. I am down to 72 days left until vacation time.

Yes, it is a kangaroo and an emu that can not walk backward.

Interesting fact #8: If you keep a goldfish in a dark room it will eventually turn white.

Question #8: Half of all Americans live within 50 miles of what?Dad and Mom Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12656655878217686609noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730212803118705887.post-27811750850727732482007-07-08T13:38:00.000-05:002007-07-08T14:28:00.246-05:00Fun Days in Rogers CityRogers City had a Independece Day type celebration on Friday July 6th. I was lucky enough to be loading stone at Stoneport, MI (30 miles away). We were at anchor just before that for about 16 hours while we waited for another boat to finish unloading before we could get space at the dock. I got home and found Loralee, P. Dot and Darleen at the house waiting for Denise to get home from work. P. Dot was making her famous and the family's favorite meal, Gleasons. That in itself was fantastic enough but Pat came over to join us for supper and after supper we played a little of the golf game in our back yard. Pat and Denise were champions for the day. Then we decided to go down to the Lakside Park where the group "Chasing Steel" was preforming a free concert. This was a bluegrass band of four men (three were brothers) from the U.P. They were not playing my favorite type music but Loralee was really getting into it. I'm not an expert in music but I thought they were pretty good if you liked that type of music. There was a pretty big crowd there for Rogers City. There was even a few that were from Onaway and Tower. In fact even Minnie and Merv were there. There was a big fish boil going on all day there. And a big slide for the kids. I guess they were displaying the big equipment at Calcite Plant at the gate. Many people were getting their picture taken in front of these huge pieces of machinery.

The day was topped off with a very nice fireworks display. All in all, it was a very nice break. I am glad I got the 3rd mate to work my shift so I could get more time at home.

And now for the answer for trivia question #5: The answer was supposed to be Broccoli but more information was found to support artichoke for an answer, also. So Denise and Darleen were both correct.

Now interesting fact #7: Mosquitos are attracted to people who just ate bananas.

Trivia question #7: What two animals can not walk backward?Dad and Mom Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12656655878217686609noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730212803118705887.post-91638492471666886722007-06-23T13:28:00.000-05:002007-06-23T14:03:05.645-05:00Update from Lake MichiganHow 's everyone enjoying the summer weather? It has been cooler than normal on Lake Michigan (about 60 degrees) that's both in the air and in the water. Right now, Saturday, I am in Buffington, IN. unloading stone. We are due to go up into the big lake, Lake Superior. I may not get home again until 2nd week in July. Countdown for my vacation in October is at 100 days. Maybe that is a little early to be counting but that's what I do.
I want to wish a couple people a belated birthday wish. Rosey's birthday was the 14th and Kim's birthday was the 15th. I hope they had a great day. And don't forget Loralee's birthday July 9th. If I have missed someone just send a comment.

Now for the trivia question answer, the answer is Pope Benedict IX at age 11. But I guess there is a lot of contrversy concerning his correct age but the oldest they have him listed is 18.

Interesting fact #6: A bal of glass will bounce higher than a ball of rubber.

Trivia Question #6: What is the only vegetable that is also a flower?Dad and Mom Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12656655878217686609noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730212803118705887.post-8187152126465602482007-06-12T20:24:00.000-05:002007-06-12T21:00:18.589-05:00On Line On BoatI am offically on line from the freighter Arthur M. Anderson. I will be posting a little more often. Maybe we can get Denise to put in a post or two. I am in Stoneport, Michigan as of 2200 (that's 10:00 P.M. for you landlubbers). We are heading for Huron, Ohio which is (interesting fact #5) the most southern point a ship can be on the Great Lakes. It is near Cedar Point for all you amusement park goers. Then it is off to Toledo to load coal for Detroit, then back to Toledo to load coal for Escanaba, MI then back to Stoneport, Michigan on the 18th.

My last day of vacation I went and saw the Detroit Pistons lose to Lebron James and the rest of the Cleveland team. But we did see an exciting double overtime game. We, being Denise, Logan, Loralee, and myself. Denise and I took Loralee's bed and made her sleep on the sofa. She lives

just a few miles from the Palace of Auburn Hills. The very next morning Denise and Loralee had to to take me to Detroit to meet the boat. They got an unexpected treat. They got to take a ride on the J.W. Westcott (the only floating post office in the U.S. and the only boat with it's own zip code: 48222)

By the way there were no correct answers to my last trivia question. The correct answer is: Back in the olden days in jolly old England they used to serve beer in pints and quarts. When the customers got rowdy they were told to mind their own pints and quarts. This got shortened to P's and Q's. Better luck next time.

Trivia Question #5: How old was the youngest Pope?Dad and Mom Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12656655878217686609noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730212803118705887.post-18792324136844714852007-05-31T10:54:00.000-05:002007-05-31T11:07:36.230-05:00Back to Work AgainAfter 30 days of vacation, it's time for me to go back to work again. But this time it will be 4 months before I get another vacation. I had a great time only wish it could be longer. Maybe in 4 years or so I could make it a permanent vacation, if you know what I mean. it was great getting together with you. If you were not one of the ones I got together with on my vacation...I'm sorry and I promise to do better in October on my next vacation.

I'm not getting much response to my trivia questions....are you shy? I will try one more time to peak your interest. By the way the score is Lauren 2, Denise 1 (and she did not cheat) Everyone Else 0.

Interesting Fact #4: There are only 2 days of the year in which there are no professional sports games played....meaning the NBA,MLB, NHL, or the NFL.

The day before and the day after the Major League All-Star Game

Question #4: In the expression "Mind your P's and Q's", what do P and Q stand for?

Good Luck and see you in OctoberDad and Mom Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12656655878217686609noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730212803118705887.post-46263466876202002662007-05-17T21:16:00.000-05:002007-05-17T08:07:29.655-05:00Whale of a Good Time!
Lucas and Kim treated Denise, Grandma, Aunt Debbie Coon and me to a whale watching excursion and a trip to the Aquarium when we got back on shore. Grandma and Aunt Debbie couldn't believe how big and nice it was. When we arrived, Kim was playing Deal or No Deal with the residents who were really happy to see all of us. We got introduced and then Kim went around and told us all their names and what they did when they were younger. To top off the night we spent 3 plus hours at a furniture store. It wasn't your typical furniture store at all. Here are some pictures to prove that.

There was a Fudruckers, Ice Cream place, Jelly Belly place, a place to learn how to do Trapeze tricks, and Liquid Fireworks (water show with color lights done to music).

As for the reason we were in the Boston area...Luke's graduation from Gordon-Conwell Seminary. One of my shortest work periods ever. In recent years I have been taking an August vacation, so this is very early for me. But there is going to be a special event this May that caused me to take an early vacation. As most of you know, my son Lucas has been attending Gordon-Conwell Seminary in Massachusetts.

Lucas will be graduating May 12, 2007. In recent years, I took one week's personal leave to attend Loralee's, Kim's and Logan's college graduations but with the added travel to the Boston area that would be unfeasible.

Traveling with Denise and me will be Lucas's grandmother Dot and Lucas's Aunt Debbie Coon. Lucas's grandmother promised me that she renewed her driver's license, so we will not have wait for her to be thoroughly searched at the airports. Grandma Dot's first plane trip was to Lucas and Kim's wedding in Nebraska and apparently she posed a potential security risk due to a piece missing on her driver's license.

After we get back from Boston, we are planning on going to a Detroit Pistons playoff game with... da Bulls. Detroit leads that series 1 game to none with the 2nd game tonight. I will only be out on the Great Lakes until the first of May as I will take a May vacation to fly to Boston to attend Lucas's graduation from Gordon-Conwell.

Then I will go on vacation again in October to do a little bowhunting and attend John and Bonnie's daughter Kathleen's wedding.

I am not sure I will have internet capability aboard the Anderson. Shannon is my brother's daughter who went back to college to get a nursing degree. The ceremony took place at Riverside Tabernacle Church. Shan stood up in front of everyone and did a reading and they had a slide show of the students. The nurses were upstairs in the balcony and they all carried a candle and came down the stairs on each side of the room to the traditional graduation song. An interesting part of the day was when we discovered not only Shan was getting her pin but someone we knew from our past was getting a pin also. When we moved to Rogers City back in the day.... our next door neighbors were the Cornett Family. They had a daughter, Jill who used to babysit our kids. Her daughter Amy was in Shan's class and they were friends but didn't know the connection until Saturday at the pinning. I (Denise) walked into the church and ran right into Amy's grandma Lamb who I've known for years. I asked her what she was doing there and she said she had a granddaughter getting pinned. In fact she was pinning her because she was also a nurse. Shannon and Amy had no idea that Amy used to live next door to us here in Rogers City. It was a bonus to see Amy get pinned. She was the youngest student getting her pin. She is just a little younger than Logan. Logan used to play with Amy and her sister Jenny when they were little. What a small world. After the pinning ceremony we went back to Uncle Dave's & Aunt Deb's to play some cards until the party started. The party was at a small hall and Aunt Deb Dunsmore was the cook. Lots to eat and fun was had by all. The best part of the evening was when Aunt Deb Dunsmore did Karaoke. She was pretty good when she was being serious. Then she started to sing gospel and with her hands high, praised the Lord. Needless to say, at that point she got a little carried away. Kim would have appreciated it from remembering her at our 50th birthday party. So the moral of the story if you're sick give... NURSE Shanny a call!!

Dad and Mom Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12656655878217686609noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730212803118705887.post-41644817134800663182007-01-11T22:12:00.000-05:002007-01-14T19:52:53.531-05:00First Post
Well, here it is....our first post. Lucas helped set up this blog when he was here for Christmas. We just got up to speed by getting wireless high speed internet yesterday. Welcome to the 21st century, right? We will be able to get rid of that annoying Callwave answering service and be able to be on the internet and still receive a telephone call.

The rush of the Christmas doings is over and we are back in our daily routine. Denise is back working everyday and I am in the process of going through the files and throwing out anything that is dated before 2000. Got rid of about 30 pounds of paper so far.

We had a great Christmas. All the kids were here for Christmas and for the day after Christmas... aka.....The Dunsmore Family Christmas and Reunion. This was the 19th annual party. There was a good turnout but still missed Jeff & Lauren and Rachel & Jesse. We did things just a little different this year. We had a few games sorta organized to play instead of a lot of card playing. I hope everyone was O.K. with that. I did come to the conclusion that there are a lot of competitive people in the family. Maybe the Personal Scavenger Hunt with Best Poker Hand was a little too intense.

We had a great week with Luke and Kim. It all started out with Grandma's legendary Gleasons for Luke's birthday. It was probably the highlight for Luke and Logan as they stuffed themselves to the point of being sick. Christmas eve was spent with Pat & Darleen and Grandma & Grandpa and the kids. Christmas day was spent mainly relaxing after the big breakfast of our favorite food....venison. Took Luke & Kim to Petoskey to see a good holiday movie called "The Holiday". On the way home we happened upon northern Michigan's version of Sasquatch or Bigfoot as something described as a mix of lion, horse, elk, and even cougar was sitting on it's haunches on the side of the road. What makes it a nice tale to talk about is....we did not turn around and go back to make sure of what we saw. So the stories will get bigger and better as the years go on. Exaggeration will abound.

We wrapped up their visit by traveling to the Palace of Auburn Hills to see the Pistons play the Indiana Pacers. This was unique being that 8 of us went (Dan, Denise, Lucas, Kim, Loralee, Rosey, Logan, and Mindy), but 4 sat on one side of the Palace and 4 sat on the other side of the Palace completely as far away as possible. We picked the tickets out of a hat to see where each person would sit and with whom. By the way, the Pistons lost by one point right at the end of the game. It was exciting nonetheless.

So... that was our first post. Please write a comment and let us know how we can improve or areas of interest you would like to read about or anything at all. Let us know what is going on in your life. We are not the expert bloggers like Lucas and Kim but with your help it could be interesting reading.
Dad and Mom Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12656655878217686609noreply@blogger.com11
